Statistically speaking, as a woman one of the worst things you can do for your career is have a baby.

It’s a sobering thought.

Despite being aware of this, I am disheartened each time a woman comes to me and tells me that their confidence has plummeted since becoming a parent and that they are struggling to make the children/work equation work.

Working mothers are stretching themselves thin at work and at home and feel like they are failing at both. Their struggle though does not reflect their capabilities.

To paraphrase, can we ‘have it all’? I dislike the gender politics of the question (to put it mildly) but it does reflect the reality of very many women with children.

A recent client began our sessions together with the goal of better work life balance (or WLB). As we talked, an interesting thing happened. Turned out she wasn’t that interested in balance after all. What she actually wanted was meaningful work that she felt very motivated by. Work she enjoyed so much she was happy to put the kids in childcare to do it.     

30 Hours Childcare

In September 2017 the 30 hours “free” childcare for working parents is being introduced.  There is a lot of confusion around 30 hours – we are exploring the topic below. 
What is the 30-hour offer? Can I get free childcare for my children? ELIGIBILITY You will be eligible for the 30-hour funded childcare offer if:
  • You earn more than the equivalent of 16 hours at the national living wage or minimum wage per week: for example, £120 per week if you are 25 or older. .
